The message was delivered on Sunday, May 27, 2018, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Michael Dowd, Guest Speaker.

MESSAGE DESCRIPTION

A deep-time big picture is vital for staying sane and sober in confusing and contracting times. Such an evidence-based “sacred realism” can help us accept what is inevitable, avoid what is futile, and be a blessing to friends, family, and neighbors in a difficult and uncertain world. This sermon by renowned eco-theologian and TEDx speaker, Michael Dowd, bridges the gap between head and heart and celebrates the convergence of science, inspiration, and sustainability.

*Rev. Michael Dowd is a bestselling eco-theologian and pro-science, pro-future ‘evangelist’ whose work has been featured in The New York Times, LA Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Newsweek, Discover, and on television nationally. His book, Thank God for Evolution, was endorsed by 6 Nobel Prize-winning scientists, noted skeptics, and by religious leaders across the spectrum. Michael has delivered two TEDx talks and a program at the United Nations. He and his wife, science writer and climate activist, Connie Barlow, have spoken to some 2,500 groups across North America since 2002, including nearly 500 UU churches. Rev. Dowd has also conducted two acclaimed online conversation series: “Evolutionary Christianity” (http://thegreatstory.org/ec-participants.html) and “The Future Is Calling Us to Greatness" (https://www.tree-of-life.works/greatness).

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, May 20, 2018, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

"I'm for truth, no matter who tells it. I'm for justice, no matter who it's for or against." —Malcolm X

Justice is the legal, moral or philosophical theory by which fairness is administered. The concept of justice often differs somewhat in every culture.

Justice can be more mental than moral, or the other way around. Consciousness is the missing link to what is otherwise a cold and caustic concept. When applied without compassion and emotion, justice can be far more destructive than constructive. Justice need never be Draconian, but compassionate and sensitive to its individual beneficiaries. Here at All Souls we both intend and insist that Justice become and remain a working reality in our world!

The message was delivered on Sunday, May 6, 2018, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister, at the Humanist Service.

MESSAGE DESCRIPTION

If my neighbor believes I’m going to hell, I don’t really care as long as they respect my property, treat me and my family nicely and let me borrow a cup a sugar or a power tool when needed. The good news for me is that whatever they believe—the fact is, they don’t control the universe, the afterlife, nor do they, or anyone, really know what is yet to come. When people ask me why our congregation is socially engaged, I explain that we place love beyond belief. Most, if not all of us, do not expect God or any other kind of savior or superhero to come down to Earth and fix it. That is why we try to do our part to make the world a better place during the short time we have and to help people out of the hells of life.

*Music by Tommy Poole (saxophone) and Rick Fortner (piano)

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, May 6, 2018, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

“Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.” —Martin Luther King, Jr.

Life is neither equal of fair, so we must learn to find justice in the life and psyche of our world that tends to be terrible and impossible at times. Justice is rooted in the word just which means behaving according to what is morally right and fair. This makes it hard to believe that life is fair. So, if indeed you feel that life isn’t fair, then how can we access and execute justice?

During May, All Souls will present weekly discussions, sermons and lectures around the subject of the human virtue and vice of justice, fairness and equality.

*Musical performance by Sarah Maud (vocals) and Jordan Hehl (bass).
