Unchain My Heart - (Rev. Tamara Lebak)

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, June 9, 2013, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Tamara Lebak, Associate Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

Ray Charles was a border walker. He was a pioneer in the genre of soul music during the 1950s by fusing rhythm and blues, gospel, and blues styles into his early recordings with Atlantic Records. He also helped racially integrate country and pop music during the 1960s with his crossover success on ABC Records, most notably with his Modern Sounds albums. While with ABC, Charles became one of the first African-American musicians to be given artistic control by a mainstream record company. Frank Sinatra called Charles “the only true genius in show business."

The influences upon his music were jazz, blues, rhythm and blues and even country. His piano playing reflected influences from country blues, barrelhouse and stride piano styles. Criticized and beloved, Ray Charles’ influence stemmed from his capacity to embrace and adapt without losing his identity. Come explore what we can learn about how to live our lives through the lens of this incredible musician.

If I Had Only Known - (Rev. Marlin Lavanhar)

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, June 2, 2013, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

Some of the most important lessons and transitions in life do not come with diplomas and festivities. We do not always have something to hang on the wall to show the world that we have made it to the other side of some test or trial. There’s an expression, “If I only knew then, what I know now…”

As we honor and recognize those who are formally graduating in this season, I thought I might offer some of the things I wished I had known when I was leaving school and heading into the adult stage of my life.
