'Remember the Fallen' - (Rev. Tamara Lebak)

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, May 25, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Tamara Lebak, Associate Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

This Memorial Day we are called to remember those who have died in service of our country. This year will mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the ‘War to end All Wars.” Military casualties are not a thing of the past. The Washington Post has dedicated a website to photographs of Americans who have died as a result of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation New Dawn, and Operation Enduring Freedom. There are nearly 7,000 faces. Of those fatalities, 129 were Oklahomans. They are mostly men, but not all. They are mostly between the ages of 20-24. More than 5,000 died in the midst of hostile action or IED (Improvised Explosive Devices). These are our neighbors, our family members ,our friends. No matter your stance on our involvement, these lives deserve to be honored for their sacrifice. Join me this Sunday as we remember the fallen.

'The Original Lie' - (Rev. Marlin Lavanhar)

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, May 18, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

We all live with certain assumptions about what is true that we later discover is not true. When the premise of one’s religion or life or marriage or anything is a lie, it effects everything else that flows from that original untruth. Interestingly, a person, church or situation can have complete integrity within the context of a foundational error. However, such integrity is based on a fundamental mistruth. For example, if a person believes about himself, “I am dumb,” this shapes his reality profoundly even if it is not true. If a person believes, “the poor will always be with us” or “people who suffer deserve it” or “we create our own reality” then those core ideas will influence our decisions and lives whether they are true or not. In this way, we are all living in a trance of some sort. When the person who thought he was dumb, realizes it’s not true, it is as if a trance or spell has been broken. It is the same with false religious beliefs and many other aspects of our incredibly complex and amazing lives.

'Autoimmune Religion' - (Randy Lewis)

The reflection was delivered on Sunday, May 18, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Randy Lewis, Adjunct Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

Like an autoimmune disease, which forces the immune system to attack its own body, intolerance, separatism, and egocentrism threaten to undo our society today. Historically, however, this is not a new development. Rarely did any civilization manage to maintain peace and harmony for any prolonged amount of time. Let us examine the role that religion has played, and could play, on the stage of the ever-unfolding human drama.

'Real Family' - (Rev. Marlin Lavanhar)

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, May 11, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

Bring a flower, bring your mother, your memories, and your children as we celebrate our annual Mother’s Day “flower communion.” In this tradition from our church in 1930’s Czechoslovakia, we each bring a flower to add to the central bouquet and take the flower brought by someone else home with us.

'Live and Let Die' - (Rev. Barbara Prose)

The reflection was delivered on Sunday, May 4, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Assistant Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

Forty-five years ago we didn’t have living wills, health care powers of attorney, DNRs, laws defining death, or 911! In one extended generation we have shifted from a society in which natural death was the norm, to a society in which most of us will die as the result of a decision: an antibiotic refused, a feeding tube disconnected, or a respirator turned off. Since our deaths are often the result of a decision, we must talk openly about when it is okay to die. Neither the right to die nor the right to live is absolute. Currently, our lawyers and our priests are the loudest voices in this conversation, but we are the ones who will face these choices for our loved ones and for ourselves. I hope you’ll join our congregation’s conversation about a healthy desire to die a good death. Can death be merciful? Let’s talk about it!
