The sermon was delivered on Sunday, June 26, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Louie Rojas, Guest Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

What’s the worst thing you’ve done? What’s the best thing you’ve done? How did courage impact the choices you made? Summoning insane courage to do the right thing and make the right choice requires fortitude, which can be learned. I will share my “Jonah story” and talk about ways to be valiente and courageous.

'WHAT DOES LOVE LOOK LIKE?' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Victor M. Parachin

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, June 26, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Victor M. Parachin, Guest Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

What the world needs now is love, sweet love,

It’s the only thing that there’s just too little of

– Burt Bacharach

That song was first recorded in 1965 and gained popularity all over the world. Love is important. We think about it, talk about it, sing about it. But, what does “love” look like? What is the “love” that the world needs now?

'TWO AMERICAS' - A message by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar

The message was delivered on Sunday, June 19, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister.

MESSAGE DESCRIPTION

The mass shooting in Orlando on Sunday has given way to two visions of America. Many of us have heard what the pundits and politicians are saying.  We are seeing how the ties that bind a nation of people from all nations can be shredded. The question before people of goodwill is "What does love call us to do?" This question cannot be divorced from "What does common sense call us to do?" or "How do we deal with real threats to our safety and security?" Like a parent's love, the love that binds us, is also a love that fiercely protects us. In this culture of soundbites and slogans, it is time for thoughtful people to look with a deeper lens at the problems before us and to discern the love and loyalties that are most likely to save us.  I look forward to contributing to the dialogue and to "putting my thumb on the scale" on behalf of the only America that makes any moral, practical and meaningful sense to me.

'YOU, ME, AND MUHAMMAD ALI' - A sermon by Rev. Barbara Prose

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, June 12, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

New York Times journalist, Wesley Morris called him, “the most important political-cultural figure to survive the deadly tumult of the 1960s and flourish in the 1970s.” Muhammed Ali’s beliefs transfixed and polarized our country thirty years before the Black Lives Matter movement. Ali is the personification of courage. Words like radical, truth, fame and, risk describe the complicated and contradictory man who turned boxing into a referendum on the state of the country. Born Cassius Clay during the Jim Crow era in Louisville, Kentucky, he learned to box after his red Schwinn bicycle was stolen at the age of twelve. At 22, Ali won his first heavyweight title. Join us this Sunday as we explore what his life has to tell and teach us about courage today.

'THE GRACE OF DARING COURAGE' - A sermon by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, June 5, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

It seems that grace appears or is needed at the worst times in our lives. To amaze is defined as “causing great surprise or wonder”. That could be anything from a child being born to September 11th and the trade center towers crumbling to the ground.

Is it the grace or the events that necessitate its appearance or presence in our lives that amazes us most? Perhaps it’s both; lost and found, blind now seeing. Being lost and blind is almost as amazing as being found and later seeing. Both tend to be other than ordinary. Guess it’s all relative.

'THE SUMMER OF LIVING DANGEROUSLY' - A sermon by Rev. Barbara Prose

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, June 5, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

In the Wizard of Oz, the lion’s, the scarecrow’s, and the tin man’s natural or God-given gifts are the parts of their personality they can’t see themselves. Dorothy and her three friends must take a long journey to discover what was right in front of their eyes all the time. What if your innate gifts are invisible to you? What road must you walk to discover them and what friends will you need to help you live into them? I hope you’ll join me as we begin our Summer of Living Dangerously, including the themes of Courage (June), Conflict (July), and Commitment (August). The world can’t wait for us to discover our brains, our hearts and our courage. The time to start the journey is now as we celebrate our own high school graduations and all our members who are ready for the next level of exploration and expression in their own lives.
