If I Had a Hammer - Rev. Barbara Prose

Sermon delivered on Sunday, July 29, 2012, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Assistant Minister.

For any of us to survive in the world today, we need a roof over our heads, enough healthy food to eat, and a good education. As a religious community that believes in deeds not creeds, we are called to create just such a world. Since 1994, our HOUS (Housing Outreach for Unitarian Souls) volunteers have been moving toward making this dream a reality, by steadily working on one house after another. Their quiet persistence has paved the way for more than one hundred families to stay healthier and happier in their own homes!

These days HOUS works with Rebuilding Together Tulsa. A spokesperson for RTT says the typical homeowner they serve is a single African American woman, over sixty, who is caring for multiple generations in one home. Back in 1994, HOUS’s founding members had a dream. They dreamed if they could do it, others would too. They’ve done it. Now it’s our turn to get organized so that more can join together in building the world we dream about.

We are a community that helps our members, our friends, and our neighbors to thrive and not just survive. I hope you’ll pay attention to your dreams, get out your hammers, and join me this Sunday as we end our Summer of Love and Justice with stories of how ordinary people can make all the difference in the world.

Sermon delivered on Sunday, July 22, 2012, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Tamara Lebak, Associate Minister.

The Unitarian Universalist Musicians Network is a professional organization of the Unitarian Universalist Association, founded in 1983, to develop and enrich music ministry in the denomination and to support the musicians who carry out this vital work.

Their current 600-plus membership encompasses both professional and volunteer musicians, largely from North America. Define American - Rev. Barbara Prose

Sermon delivered on Sunday, July 8, 2012, at All Souls by Rev. Barbara Prose, Assistant Minister.

With the recent Supreme Court ruling on Arizona’s SB1070 and President Obama’s executive action on young immigrants, the national debate is intensifying.

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas’s definition of an American is, “Anyone who works hard, who’s proud of his country and wants to contribute; who’s not a burden on anyone.” Rev. Kelvin Sauls, writing for the Black Alliance for Just Immigration, states, “A human rights framework must be foundational to the development of immigration policy nationally.”

Members of our congregation have formed the All Souls Alliance for Just Immigration, or ASAJI, and are committed to continue learning about global patterns of migration, emigration, and immigration.

What is your definition of a real American? And why? Listen to this sermon and consider what it means to be an American citizen.
