The sermon was delivered on Sunday, December 27, 2015, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Gerald Davis, Affiliate Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

We are in between Christmas and New Year’s Day. This in-between season has us leaning back and forth, looking back and looking forward. But we are called to be in the here and now. Come join me as we commune in the present and delightfully revel in this space.

'THE QURAN & JESUS' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, December 20, 2015, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

Americans seem to have strong opinions about Muslims, Islam, and the Quran, but also have very little knowledge of the faith with which they talk. In the message, The Quran and Jesus, Rev. Lavanhar shares some little known facts about Islam and how they relate to Christianity and this season.

'PEACE IS POSSIBLE' - A sermon by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, December 13, 2015, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

Peace means ultimate calm resolve or resolution. The pursuit for and of it seems to be, for most, a major exercise in futility. Peace is understanding and embracing the nature of the beast. Why does peace seem so elusive? Are we missing something? Or is peace something we must always "fake it till we make it?" We don't have to go along to get along. We can mind many of the same things without having the same mind about everything. Let’s get started!

'IS PEACE POSSIBLE?' - A message by Rev. Barbara Prose

The message was delivered on Sunday, December 13, 2015, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry.

MESSAGE DESCRIPTION

The headlines recently are disturbing:

“There Have Been More Mass Shootings Than Sunrises This Year.”

“World War Isis.”

“God Isn’t Fixing This.”

With headlines like that, it’s time to talk. Are we violent or compassionate by nature? Are wars inevitable or avoidable?

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “The choice is not between violence and nonviolence but between nonviolence and nonexistence.”

What is the opposite of violence, if it is not nonviolence?

It’s time to talk because the more we understand about the roots of violence, the more we can effectively contribute to and create peace, in the world and in our own lives.

It’s time to talk, because what we think and believe really matters.

'GRATITUDE THAT GROWS' - A sermon by David Ruffin

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, December 6, 2015, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by David Ruffin, Assistant Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

When I was a kid, my mother always made me hand write thank you notes for any gift I received. It was, my mother instructed me, simply the right thing to do. ...I confess, the practice did not become a habit. Which raises the question, can you command gratitude? The bible certainly does... And giving the mounting scientific data correlating health and happiness with gratitude, so soon might your physician! But something far more powerful is at work causing us to share our praise and thanksgiving with the fullness, freedom and gladness with which we can...even when our situation feels anything but praiseworthy…such that our praise itself becomes generative of praise.

Join me in exploring the creative power we hold to re-awaken to and, in fact, to fulfill the good news of Universal love, through our praise. Join me in opening your heart, anew, to sharing gratitude that grows.

'BEING PREPARED' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, December 6, 2015, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

Traditionally at this time of year, Christians are preparing for the coming of God. I saw a bumper sticker once that said, “Jesus is Coming, Look Busy!” Yet, regardless of one’s beliefs or one’s questions about belief, we can all feel at times like we are preparing for something. Have you ever been through a challenging experience and had the feeling that you were being prepared for something bigger? Let’s talk about what it is for which we feel we must be prepared.

'TURNING THE TABLES' - A homily by Rev. Barbara Prose

The homily was delivered on Sunday, November 22, 2015, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry.

HOMILY DESCRIPTION

All Souls will held one combined service at 10:30 a.m. with music from many of our different choirs (Children’s, Youth, Cherubs, New Dimensions and the Adult Choirs will all participate). Children were asked to bring fruits or vegetables to add to our cornucopia in the front of the sanctuary. All of the food was donated to those in need in our city. A few times a year, all three distinct Sunday services join together in a single unforgettable celebration. Our theme this year: Turning the Tables.

The Sunday before Thanksgiving is one of the four times a year when we offer a communion service (in the style of our partner church in Europe). The ritual was conducted in the small chapel immediately following the main service and was open to everyone.

'FROM GRIEF TO GRATITUDE' - A sermon by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, November 15, 2015, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson, Guest Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

Gratitude is feeling pleased or placated and basically has to do with being less angry, offended or hostile in your life essence. Thanksgiving is the art, discipline and science of refusing or refuting anger and the illusion of displeasure. It has much to do with attitude and personal values and evaluations.

The message was delivered on Sunday, November 15, 2015, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry.

MESSAGE DESCRIPTION

Terrorism has no religion.

For many of us, the tragedy hasn’t quite sunk in yet. Nearly 130 people are dead in the worst violence witnessed by France since World War II, deemed by the French President "an act of war.” Responsibility for the coordinated attacks has been claimed by ISIL, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. Witnesses during the attacks said the terrorists were shouting, "Allahu Akbar,” or “God is Great!,” during their rampage.

On social media some French people have been circulating variations on this theme: “Don’t ‪#‎PrayforParis‬…religion is what caused this.” And how are we, members of a liberal religion, to understand such unthinkable violence that derives its strength from religion? And how can we take a stand against Islamic religious terrorism and extremism, while embracing the vast, overwhelming majority of Muslims who wish only for a world of peace and love?
