The Gift of Acceptance - Bishop Carlton Pearson

Sermon delivered on Sunday, November 25, 2012, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Bishop Carlton Pearson, Guest Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

Giving is something we do, given is something we are, or should be. One is an external act, the other is an internal fact. Deep within the soul and spirit of humanity is an innate and intrinsic virtue and valor to give as well as receive. It is natural law. There is, in all of us, a powerful sense of worth, inward wealth and desire, indeed a need to serve, share, and show the light and love we all came here with. Doing so is the irresistible discipline and divinity of the Self. Join me, as we explore the ancient art of giving and receiving, and prepare for the season ahead.

The Gift of Acceptance - Rev. Barbara Prose

Sermon delivered on Sunday, November 25, 2012, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Assistant Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

Do you remember the Lone Ranger? The iconic American hero, who rode into towns along the Western frontier, saved the day, and then rode away before anyone could thank him? As we leave Thanksgiving behind and head toward the great gift exchange season of Christmas, I’ve been wondering why it is so difficult for many of us, not just the Lone Ranger, to receive.
Paradoxical as it may appear, giving is often easier than receiving. Not just material gifts, but gifts of friendship, trust, and even love. For some, once we receive and recognize a gift, we feel we also owe something in return. Others may believe they are not worthy of receiving.
No matter which role you prefer, this ancient tradition that traces back to the ancient Babylonians, the Druids, and the Romans, depends on both – a giver and a receiver. Sociologists, psychologists, and economists agree that gift exchanges have been, and continue to be, a powerful force for communities and civilizations.
We explore the significance, the benefits, and the risks of gift exchanges, past and present.

Even When the Rain Doesn't Come - Pastor Eric Banner

Message delivered on Sunday, November 18, 2012, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Eric Banner, Intern Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

It's not hard to choose gratitude when times are easy, but it is even more important to choose gratitude when times are tough. In this message I explore what Oklahomans know about surviving hard times, like the Dust Bowl and having your house burn down, and yet still finding something to be grateful for. The first step is having a regular practice of gratitude, and using times like Thanksgiving to remind ourselves of all that we already have to be grateful for, especially when it feels like there's nothing but the blue sky and a stool to sit on. What will you find to be grateful for, even when the rain doesn't come?

United We Stand - Rev. Marlin Lavanhar

Sermon delivered on Sunday, November 11, 2012, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

Patrick Henry (in 1799) famously said, “United we stand; divided we fall. Let us not split into factions which must destroy that union upon which our existence hangs.” It is said in different words in the Bible, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” Mark 3:25

Democracy works because we are united by a vision and set of values larger than any party, platform, or position. All Souls is the same, in that there are often people on both sides of every social, political, and economic debate who call this church their home. We have been successful in being able to hold divergent opinions and disagree while still retaining our loyalties to our church home. This spirit began at the founding meeting of the church.

On this Sunday following a national Presidential election, we share the spirit that binds us together as a nation and a church even when differences could divide us. It is good to be reminded of our highest ideals, as well as what has inspired the best of the best to remain loyal to something higher than their own opinions, agendas and biases. It is the root of greatness.

Choose Gratitude - Rev. Tamara Lebak

Sermon delivered on Sunday, November 4, 2012, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Tamara Lebak, Associate Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

Author and researcher Dr. Robert Emmons believes he has discovered what gives life meaning: Gratitude.

Emmons is a professor at the University of California and supports his claim with research that suggests people who view life as a gift and consciously acquire an “attitude of gratitude” improve their emotional and physical health. According to Emmons, gratitude is a “chosen attitude.” We must be willing to recognize and acknowledge when we are the recipients of an unearned benefit.

In our Humanist service at 8:30 a.m., we explore this choice of gratitude. At 10:00 a.m. in the traditional service, the message is further illustrated by a children’s story from the Bhagavad Gita, and in the 11:30 a.m. contemporary service we hear about Jesus’ healing of the lepers in the Gospel of Luke.
