'UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, July 31, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

We, as humans, think we can predict the outcomes of our actions and decisions, yet life is governed by unintended consequences. At one time, the British government attempted to reduce the problem of venomous Cobra snakes in India by creating a reward for dead snakes. Initially, it worked to reduce the threat, but eventually many people began to breed Cobra’s in order to profit from the reward. The government then stopped offering rewards which lead to breeders setting worthless snakes free - increasing the menace significantly.

In the 70’s and 80’s, the CIA funded Afghan Mujahideen rebels to defeat the Soviets. This inadvertently lead to the rise of the Taliban and Al-Qaeda.

During the 20’s, prohibition in America increased organized crime and corruption.

Personal and policy decisions tend to created unintended consequences. How can we prepare for unintended consequences in our individual and communal lives? Also, as our city and nation discuss ways to move forward politically and practically, let us pay attention to the humbling role of unforeseen outcomes and the conflict of interests which can cause them.

Special thanks to All Souls member Scott Asbiornson, one of our recent “auction sermon” winners, for suggesting this intriguing topic.

'CONFLICT AND DISCIPLINE OF GRACEFUL LIVING' - A sermon by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, July 24, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

Avoiding conflict is virtually impossible. Working and walking through it responsibly is the discipline of graceful living. Making a conscious decision to co-exist and cohabitate peacefully while recognizing, respecting, tolerating, and celebrating our honest and legitimate differences, is a social discipline. This is achieved through developing higher levels of consciousness and reverence for the elegance, eloquence and excellence of our human and divine proclivities and intrinsic virtues.

'BLACK AND BLUE - PART TWO: ACTS OF NON-VIOLENCE' - A sermon by Rev. Barbara Prose

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, July 24, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

“Whether it’s the violence and terror by those who misuse the badge or the violence and terror against those who wear the badge and are doing their sworn duty, it is wrong. Violence will only beget more violence,” said the Rev. Dr. William J. Barber. The way of non-violence is a deep and demanding spiritual commitment that we can all adopt as our own. It is active, never passive. Now is the time to read and study the words of Thoreau, Gandhi, and King as we recommit to the practice of satyagraha, or soul force. We really do need each other to survive.

'CONFLICT: THE ART OF PROGRESS' - A sermon by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, July 17, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

Conflict is a form of friction. In psychology, conflict is defined as a condition in which a person experiences a clash of opposing wishes or needs. To feel incompatible or at variance; to clash.

Friction, on a personal and human level, is conflict or animosity caused by a clash of wills, temperaments, or opinions. Newton’s third law suggests that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Walking and working through this reality must be deliberate and intentional rather than combative. The key is finding the emotional lubricant that makes conflict bearable and even productive.

'BLACK AND BLUE - PART ONE: ACTS OF VIOLENCE' - A sermon by Rev. Barbara Prose

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, July 17, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

This has been one of the toughest weeks of my life. The tragic killing of two men at the hands of police and then the tragic killing of five police officers, all in one week, in one nation, is too much. “The sounds of bullets, the pictures of death and violence, we’re seeing it too much. Rather than love and humanity, we’re seeing death and inhumanity. This is violence and death gone wild,” says the Rev. Dr. William J. Barber. I hope to see you in church this Sunday, so together we can explore the human roots of conflict and violence, as we reclaim our own humanity, share some tips on how to deal with conflict in our daily lives, and ready ourselves for the long walk toward a more just and peaceful world.

'LOVE IS A BATTLEFIELD' - A sermon by Rev. Gerald Davis

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, July 10, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Gerald Davis, Affiliate Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

Author and professor Cornell West often reminds us that justice is just love in public. I believe love in public, unfortunately, requires struggle – from Seneca Falls to Selma and Stonewall. To reference President Obama, we have witnessed how struggle can lead to justice. Conflict, therefore, is not always a bad thing. Come ride with me on this freedom train onto the battlefield.

'AMERICAN JIHAD' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, July 3, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

Jihad has become a scary word in the west among non-Muslims. It’s been used to refer to holy wars and insurgencies. Yet, the word ‘Jihad’ is one of the sacred pillars of ‪#‎Islam‬. We are told Islam is a religion of peace. It’s probably time more of us understand what this word and concept truly mean.
