'CHANGING LIVES IN GUATEMALA AND AT HOME' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, February 19, 2017, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

Since the unexpected death of our daughter Sienna, we have learned that when a child precedes her parents in death, it reverses the usual dynamic of legacy. Instead of the parents’ legacy being in the child’s hands, the child’s legacy is in the parents’ hands. The Sienna Project is how we continue our daughter’s legacy. The Sienna Project is a non-profit which has now built eight schools in remote villages in Guatemala. Earlier this month, myself and sixteen All Souls members, were transformed by our experience building a new school in a small Mayan village. To see how Sienna’s short life will continually impact generations of children through education is a blessing beyond words. The Sienna Project is also changing our lives. Those who have participated in this year’s and past projects, have been transformed by the experience. It reminds me about the meaning and potential this life holds, even after death. We would like to share with you how the experience we had impacts the way we see our world and our place in it.

'OXYGEN OF THE SOUL' - A sermon by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, February 12, 2017, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson, Affiliate Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

“America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.”

—Abraham Lincoln

Freedom is our power, our right to act, to speak, and to think as we want without hindrance or restraint. Freedom is an inside reality. Freedom is consciousness. Moshe Dayan calls freedom the “oxygen of the soul.” Freedom isn’t a gift as much as a choice. It is a decision one must make in order to experience both its outward and inward manifestation.

Galatians 5:1 “Stand fast therefore in the freedom wherewith Christ (consciousness) has made you free and be not again entangle with a yoke of (religious) bondage...”

“Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.” —Martin Luther King, Jr.

'LIFE, LIBERTY & LEGACY' - A sermon by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, February 12, 2017, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

“The God who gave us life, gave us liberty at the same time.” —Thomas Jefferson

Jefferson was an American Revolutionary and someone who penned the Declaration of Independence. But, how did he square this sentiment with being a slave owner? The reality is, most of us are more complex than our reputations allow. A faithful patriot can be an unfaithful spouse. Someone with a successful career can fail as a parent. Everyone has weaknesses but must we judge others by their worst mistakes? Can we honor parts of someone when they lack integrity in other areas? How do we measure the value of a life? Perhaps we reflect on the words from Jesus, “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone.”

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, February 5, 2017, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Joseph Boyd, Intern Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

When we think of strangers, we often think of people who think and live differently than we do. This Sunday, we will explore the question: “Who is the stranger within us?” Mystics have emphasized the importance of beginner’s mind, of not taking ourselves and our world for granted. We will explore how to cultivate a state of mind that allows us to see ourselves with fresh eyes and how we can meet ourselves and others with an open heart.

'HIDDEN FIGURES' - A sermon by Rev. Barbara Prose

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, February 5, 2017, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

Award winning film, Hidden Figures, highlights parts of the U.S. space program which have been long ignored. When parts of history are uncovered, they can change our understanding of ourselves and our understanding of our nation’s history. History is always in the making. What parts of our own histories do we need to uncover? Let’s shine a light into the dark corners of our own history so we can take our place as the writers, actors, and directors in the next act of our local and national story.
