Simple Living - Rev. Marlin Lavanhar

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, April 28, 2013, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

Have you ever wanted to simplify your life? A popular hymn is titled, “’Tis a Gift To Be Simple.” I write this while I am listening to internet radio over a Bluetooth player as I type on my laptop computer and eat what is probably a genetically modified carrot; and now my phone is vibrating to tell me a text message has just arrived from the pharmacy to let me know my child’s medication is ready to be picked up at theirdrive through window. As soon as I’m done writing this I’m going to put on a dry-cleaned shirt and go pick up the medicine. I may make a call as I’m driving or listen to an audio book. All this before making it to the office. But I better check my email and Facebook and send a Tweet before leaving for the day. Whether this sounds familiar or unbelievable, join me Sunday as I tackle the subject of “simplicity” for a sermon that was purchased in the auction by Lisa and Jim Perrault. In fact, it is a topic with deep religious, philosophical and practical roots.

Coming of Age Service, Part 2 - Rev. Marlin Lavanhar

The homily was delivered on Sunday, April 21, 2013, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

It is considered by many to be one of the best Sundays of the year. Our Coming of Age service includes powerful, personal expressions of the beliefs of our ninth graders. It takes a lot of thought, courage, and self-confidence for these teens to share their core beliefs with the rest of the congregation.

You may recall that at All Souls, during an infant or child dedication service, the minister welcomes infants and children into the fellowship of all good souls and dedicates them into the service of righteousness and love. The parents pledge that when their child reaches the age of discretion, they will fulfill their obligation as parents to impart to their child the meaning and importance of the hour. The congregation then stands and pledges their support to nurture, care for, and help raise the child. At the end of the ceremony the minister hands each infant or child a flower.

In the Spring of each year we give a flower to each youth who has completed our ninth grade Coming of Age class, and invite them before the congregation to recognize they have now reached the age of discretion. In our tradition, this service can be compared to a Bar/Bat Mitzvah in the Jewish community or Confirmation for Christians. It means a great deal to the youth, to their parents, and to the life of our church community that we share this service to honor and welcome the next generation. It is these ceremonies and rites of passage that help us connect with one another across the generations, and with the heritage of all souls across the expanse of time.

An Earth Ethic: What Can I....or We Do? - Rev. Barbara Prose

The message was delivered on Sunday, April 21, 2013, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Assistant Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

Talk of climate change, global warming, monster storms, and islands disappearing under the sea, leave many of us feeling overwhelmed and helpless. I learned this week that ORU thinks climate change is real and threatening, thus their administration is preparing to respond to coming changes here in Tulsa. The question becomes, how can we work together, no matter what our theology is, to ensure that our children and grandchildren will have healthy food to eat, clean water to drink, and wilderness areas to experience. Find out how you can join with others to preserve and protect our futures.

In Pieces? (Contemporary) - Rev. Tamara Lebak

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, April 14, 2013, during the contemporary service at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Tamara Lebak, Associate Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

Rev. Dr. John Wolf, our Minister Emeritus wrote, “The church… is not a body of doctrine, or of reasons; or of explanations. It is a community of those who have known the deepest valley and who have passed through it to the other side…they have not been lost, or embittered in the passage. Instead, in spite of it, or, rather, because of it, they have learned compassion, joy, peace, long suffering, gentleness, goodness, and self-control. The anxiety, the frustration, the despair, the gap between ourselves and others, the separation we feel with the ground of our own being, cannot be overcome by religion. It is overcome in the community of the broken, the communion of saints, it is in the church wherein we are reconciled, bringing to it as we do the pieces of our lives—if not our lives in pieces—to share with one another.”

Have you been to the valley, where the very foundation under your feet has crumbled? Have you lost someone you love dearly? How can we continue to live in the face of such tragedy? How can they live on in spite of such finality? Join me this week as I examine our lives in pieces and how it is the church, not theology, nor religion that truly saves us. It is in fact the community of the broken.

What Saves Us? (Traditional) - Rev. Marlin Lavanhar

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, April 7, 2013, during the traditional service at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

In my April article in the Simple Gifts Journal, I said, “God, please save us from having to endure the arrogance and pity of your believers who think they know how and why the rest of us need to be saved.” Even when I try to convince myself that the people who pester others about being saved are really doing it from a place of concern and care, it still often feels like it is really driven by their fear and short-sidedness.

Nevertheless, even when one’s soul seems secure, in the course of a lifetime it is not uncommon for our lives to be in need of saving. Has your life ever been saved by luck or providence, by love or medicine or friends? It is good to be alive without the fear of cosmic punishment, and it is wonderful to be alive, knowing that at times our life has been saved by the good works of others and the mystery that pervades our existence. Let’s be honest about what really saves us!
