'Revolution' - (Rev. Tamara Lebak)

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, December 28, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Tamara Lebak, Adjunct Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

John Howard Yoder writes, "If we are ever to rescue God's Good News from all the justifiable but secondary meanings it has taken on, perhaps the best way to do it is to say that the root meaning of the term evagelion would today best be translated as "revolution.'"

A revolution is a dramatic and wide-reaching change in the way something works, is organized or in our ideas about it. It is also a single orbit of one object around an axis or center. As we prepare to enter a new revolution around the sun, let us consider what parts of our own lives call for revolution? What is the axis on which we make our decisions? What parts of our lives are not connected to center that may be unnecessarily adding to the load we bear? How do we reconcile our commitments with a new revelation? Martin Luther King wrote, “[W]e are experiencing today one of the greatest revolutions that the world has ever known. Every segment of society is being swept into its mainstream. The great challenge facing [us now] is to remain awake, alert and creative....”

'Bridging Between Hopes and Dreams' - (Bishop Carlton D. Pearson)

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, December 21, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Bishop Carlton D. Pearson, Guest Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

King Solomon of old wrote: “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when dreams come true, there is life and joy.” Proverbs 13:12

One of the kindest most gracious wishes people give to someone they admire or care for is, “May all your hopes and dreams come true”. There is a strange, usually strained and direct connection between hopes and dreams. They are not one and the same thing, but strongly associated. To hope is to expect. To dream is to imagine. We can learn to imagine what we expect and expect what we imagine. We must not only build, but be

the bridge between the two. Lets talk about effective and productive ways of doing that.

It is powerfully possible!

'Solstice' - (Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar)

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, December 21, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

In this season when our current culture bombards us with commercialism, consumerism, and Christian ardor, let us take a moment to step out of the clamor and remember the solstice and how nature is a source of our renewal and hope. People in ancient times were much more connected to the cycles of nature. They spent more time outside. They cultivated the earth on a daily basis, had substantially fewer conveniences and comforts so that the seasons had an even more essential and inexorable influence on their lives. Winter solstice was an important time of celebration and had a role in helping people face their fears with hope and joy.

'Hope Matters' - (Rev. Barbara Prose)

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, December 14, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

Do you believe the world will be a better place in 100 years? It’s a tough question, so here it is again. Do you believe the world will be a better place in 100 years? I asked the leaders of our social justice teams this question. What’s your answer? Defense attorney, Jill Webb, asks all potential jurors the same question. Because it matters what we believe about progress, human nature, and the end of times. It’s easy to despair, and hard to hope. But hope matters.

'Pandora's Box: Where Real Hope Resides' - (Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar)

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, December 7, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

In this message, Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar lifts up the ways that real and lasting hope is found amidst the struggles and pain of life.  We are not supposed to run from our pain, but run toward it.  Our wounds are also wombs through which our hope and destiny is born.  In order to follow our bliss, we must first follow our blisters.  If we have been alive a while then we have blisters on our bodies and our hearts.  These are doorways to our gifts and our life's full expression.  In the midst of protests and racial tensions around America in the wake of Ferguson, this message includes a rare glimpse into the ways Rev. Lavanhar has been grappling with issues of hope and despair, oppression and the call for liberation.

'We Are Ferguson' - (David Ruffin)

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, November 30, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by David Ruffin, Resident Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

There are walls around me. Walls around all of us. Walls of misperception, yielding walls around our hearts, all of which have erected structural walls of injustice in our country and world. Racism in America is a particularly malicious misperception, whose walls not only continue to imprison the heart of this country, but prove lethal to our children. Amidst the intensity of recent collisions with these walls, our focus has again sharpened upon them.

But how do we keep from yet again merely pacing their perimeter? What will enable us truly to transform our walls into bridges for our children to a future free from the prison of racism? Whatever the color of our skin, how do we sustain our commitment to end racism as if the lives of our very children depended on our success? ...because they absolutely do.

'Coming Together: at Church' - (Rev. Barbara Prose)

The homily was delivered on Sunday, November 23, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Assistant Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

On Sunday, November 23rd, All Souls will have one combined service at 10:30 AM with music from many of our different choirs (Children’s, Youth, Cherubs, New Dimensions and the Adult Choirs will all participate). Children are asked to bring fruits or vegetables to add to our cornucopia in the front of the sanctuary. All of the food will be donated to those in need in our city. Our ministers have been working on a special way to celebrate this national holiday. It will be the first time on a Sunday morning that we are inviting our members from all three of the distinct Sunday services to join together in a single celebration. On this holiday when we lift up the story of people coming together across cultures and differences in the past, we will create a living example of such unity and what it means to us in the present. We will be offering a traditional Hungarian Unitarian communion service in the small chapel following the main service.
