The sermon was delivered on Sunday, October 18, 2015, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by David Ruffin, Resident Minister.
There is deep spiritual truth to be found in facing and "surrendering" to the limits of our own power. Our lives are shaped by so much that is out of our control. Yet even knowing in our hearts the poor odds of playing the game: "our will versus the world," we'll often still bet our lives on this approach. Our power to shape the world is also profound, though. Humans have completely transformed this planet, for better and for worse. Seeing this, isn't it natural and good for us to want to use our best-intentioned agency to its fullest?! We'll step into this gap between acceptance and striving, and explore the deeper power and powerful practice of shaping what shapes us.
