May 26, 2013
The message was delivered on Sunday, May 26, 2013, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Eric Banner, Intern Minister.
We often live our lives as though if we could all agree on how to say what is true, then everything else would fall into place. And it is true that sometimes that is an important step along the way. But words have meaning that depends on their context and the person who's saying them. The same sentence can come from two different people and mean two very different things. We've all had the experience of saying something exactly as we mean it, only to discover that what someone heard wasn't what we meant at all.
In a congregation and community as diverse as ours, filled with people of differing ages, theologies, ethnicities and different economic situations, it can be hard to understand each other from time to time.
If you've ever heard someone say something that really upset you, only to find out later they didn't mean what you thought you heard at all, this Sunday is for you. Because it turns out the truth is so much more than words.
