The sermon was delivered on Sunday, March 16, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Tamara Lebak, Associate Minister.
In the fall of this year, a member of the congregation purchased my sermon at the auction. Her desire is that I preach on Big Data. This Sunday at the 8:30 service I will dive headfirst into Big Data and its implications for understanding who we are as consumers and human beings. Data is constantly being generated from our phones, televisions, credit cards, planes, Internet searches, traffic patterns, and so much more. According to Jonathan Shaw, writer for Harvard Magazine, “The data flow is so fast that the total accumulation of the past two years a zettabyte dwarfs the prior record of human civilization.” The revolution of Big Data and why everyone is talking about it is not the amount of data, itís that we have created new ways to process, analyze, and even visualize that data to make it useful. Using Big Data effectively is what has allowed Amazon to potentially be better at predicting what you are planning to buy next than your partner. In the 10:00 and 11:30 services I will expand into the religious implications of the correlation of data to understanding ourselves and our world.
