Mar 1, 2020
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, March 1, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Mariela Pérez-Simons, Intern Minister.
“What a long time it can take to become the person one has always been,” says the writer and teacher Parker Palmer. This sermon is inspired by Palmer’s words. I want to explore the ways in which the human soul goes into “hiding” because of acculturation, oppression, or trauma. Psychologists have a term for it, disassociation, and some indigenous cultures call it “the loss of soul” while offering options for healing, such as “soul retrieval” journeys. Join me to look at the ways we can free our truest, most authentic selves and lead lives of presence and wholeness. As Zora Neale Hurston once said, “Love makes your soul crawl out from its hiding place.”
