May 24, 2015
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, May 24, 2015, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by David Ruffin, Resident Minister.
It’s Pentecost Sunday! The day of burning bushes! The day of the Holy Spirit’s anointing! The day of speaking with flaming tongues! The birthday of the church! A day of transcendence!
Yet the real power of Pentecost was in the miracle that this transcendent experience was shared. The greatest gift of the Spirit was not some new great secret Divine revelation, but the revelation of connection with one another. The ability to speak and to be heard at the deepest level of the heart amongst those who did not even share a language.
What would change if you were given the gift to share the deepest truth of your heart with those around you and truly be heard? What might shift in your heart if you were given the gift of hearing the deepest truth of your neighbors’ hearts? These questions aren’t hypothetical. The gift is still ours to receive.
