The sermon was delivered on Sunday, August 17, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Assistant Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

Recently, I asked a friend if she would teach me how to do flip turns in the pool. She gave me some great tips on how to create momentum with my head and my feet, and how to position and use my arms to keep the momentum going. Yet despite her kindness, skill, and patience, I couldn’t seem to stay straight or flip fast.

Some say, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” Others say, “It’s never too late to learn.” Gregory of Nyssa, the 4th century Christian mystic said the perfection of the spiritual journey is precisely that it is never finished. I say we belong to religious communities in part because it is where we can continue to teach and learn and grow, no matter what, until the very end.

As our community’s children return to school, and we anticipate the beginning of the church year together, I look forward to exploring the sacred nature of the teacher-student relationship and how our congregations can be classrooms for the soul.
