The sermon was delivered on Sunday, April 5, 2020, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Mariela Pérez-Simons, Intern Minister. The recording includes a pastoral-care message from Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister.
“Survival of the fittest” has always been a deeply misunderstood concept, but now, after decades of research by sociologists and evolutionary biologists, a new picture of human nature has emerged, showing how human beings—in order to survive as a species—had to learn to cooperate. While we can act in selfish ways, there’s well-researched evidence that shows how we are actually wired for goodness and how altruism is part of our true nature.
While our culture has an impact on our personality, there are deeper, ancient forces working through us, propelling us toward goodness, love, and collaboration.
This Sunday, our ministerial intern, Mariela Pérez-Simons, makes a passionate case for cultivating altruistic love and compassion for our well-being and the well-being of others.
