The sermon was delivered on Sunday, February 7, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by David Ruffin, Assistant Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

One of the grandest, boldest lies we tell in these United States is of our great unity amidst our diversity. E pluribus unum... “out of many one.” Purple America! We are many… but are we so united? And to the extent that we are, do we truly honor and respect our differences?

We humans do long for union and for the experience of connection. We sense some greater truth in oneness. But, we also covet control and certainty. Amidst these competing commitments, the story and feeling of unity in diversity is a compromise for which we often settle, even if down deeper we know it ain’t necessarily so.

What truly holds us together? For that matter, what holds one individual together and me together? Is there unity amidst the diversity of our own identities? Let’s set aside our dreams of holding hands across America, for a moment at least, and start here by looking deeper within.
