SERMON DESCRIPTION

Forty-five years ago we didn’t have living wills, health care powers of attorney, DNRs, laws defining death, or 911! In one extended generation we have shifted from a society in which natural death was the norm, to a society in which most of us will die as the result of a decision: an antibiotic refused, a feeding tube disconnected, or a respirator turned off. Since our deaths are often the result of a decision, we must talk openly about when it is okay to die. Neither the right to die nor the right to live is absolute. Currently, our lawyers and our priests are the loudest voices in this conversation, but we are the ones who will face these choices for our loved ones and for ourselves. I hope you’ll join our congregation’s conversation about a healthy desire to die a good death. Can death be merciful? Let’s talk about it!
