The sermon was delivered on Sunday, July 20, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Tet Gallardo, Minister of the UU Bicutan Metro Manila, Philippines.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

In the 1960s, in the Philippines, the Rev. Toribio Quimada discovered our newly merged Unitarian Universalist faith. He, who had helped farmers gain land titles, whose house was burned, whose family barely escaped, who was killed by unknown assassins, was a true 20th century religious martyr. And he was deeply moved and inspired by our faith’s commitment and call to justice. His daughter is the anchor for 27 congregations across the Philippines today.

Only 4 years ago, a dissident, Carlos Celdran, a UU supporter, was charged with an archaic Spanish era law about “offending religious feelings.” His crime? He protested against the Catholic lobby prohibiting women from receiving information about their reproductive health. His case is currently in the Philippine Supreme Court.

Our faith is alive in the Philippines, a country of diverse people, often divided, but always strong in their desire for freedom. Come and hear about these very relevant heroes of our shared tradition.
