Jul 12, 2015
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, July 12, 2015, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Barbara Prose, Executive Director of Ministry.
She was a leader of the student movement for civil rights. She was willing to put her life on the line for justice. When directly challenged by the Kennedy administration to stop the Freedom Riders because she was “going to get somebody killed,” Nash replied, ‘You don’t understand–we signed our wills last night.” She survived the violence of the 60s and is still speaking prophetic words today, “I don’t think what needs to be done in this country is going to be done by elected officials. American citizens have to take the country into our own hands, the future of this country, and do what’s necessary.” As we work together to make our lives and the lives of all people more just and more joyful, join me to learn from a living prophet, a woman who knew her own power and used it for good.
