Oct 2, 2016
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, October 2, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister.
When we confront deep challenges and crises we also are presented with great opportunities. In Christian language, such times are called, “Kairos” time. The idea is that God is fully present to us in these times. In Kairos times, what is considered usual is disrupted and there is the possibility for a new future. It is a time that is pregnant with the potential for a new relationship with one’s history and one’s sense of self and others. It is considered also to be God’s call into a new relationship between us and God. Tulsa is in Kairos time after the tragic killing of Terence Crutcher. His father, Rev. Joey Crutcher, in forgiving the police officer for killing his son, while also continuing to pursue justice, is showing us a way forward that is deeply rooted in his Christian faith. Can Tulsa “Rise Up” in this Kairos moment? What can we learn from it?
