Oct 13, 2013
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, October 13, 2013, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister.
In a childhood version of ethics and faith, good things happen to good people. Yet tragedy and misfortune are much less discriminating than that. A drunk driver hits a car and survives, while in the hit car a small child dies. Such events defy all concepts of fairness. Religions too often seem to become apologists for a God who would create such a cruel world. And many Atheists site such cruelty as proof that there can be no God. Often, in people’s explanations of how and why bad things happen to good people, they unwittingly present theories and theologies that not only insult our intelligence but that ought to insult even “the gods!”
This Sunday, I want to have a courageous and honest conversation about why life is not fair and what we might do about it.
