SERMON DESCRIPTION

Last month in the Traditional Service and the Point I delivered a message about “Transcending Loss.” In it I talked about what losing my daughter has taught me about America’s race problems and what it showed me about overcoming grief and trauma. This week I will take the opportunity to deliver the same message for the Contemporary Service with a few changes. We live in a culture of denial in many ways. However, the only way out of grief is through it. That is why some of the recurring problems we face as a nation are directly related to our inability or unwillingness to face the truth and the trauma of America’s history of racial violence. I believe the situations in Ferguson, Baltimore, Tulsa, and elsewhere are a manifestation of our nation’s need to deal with our collective memory in ways that allow us to move forward in positive and unified ways.
