The sermon was delivered on Sunday, September 4, 2016, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Steven Williams, Student Minister.
There’s a passage in Matthew 5 that starts, “When the Son of Man comes... All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.” Instead of taking a literal approach to this statement, I think it represents what kind of behavior God wants from people, and what the world would look like in the best case scenario, where we act in our common interest — or the worst case scenario, where we act in our self-interest. When we act like goats, which are hierarchical, everyone-for-oneself creatures, then the world suffers. But, when we act in the interest of all humanity, we allow for eternal life.
