The sermon was delivered on Sunday, June 22, 2014, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister.
Our Summer Sermon Series on Heroes, Heroines, and Heretics continues with a look at the inspiring life of Maya Angelou. Dr. Angelou grew up through the era of lynching and segregation; she was a teenage mom, a one time prostitute, a madam, singer, street car conductor, actress, professor, poet and so much more. She rose from humble means and hardship and went on to deliver a poem to her nation at the inauguration of a US president (Bill Clinton) and to befriend some of the 20th centuries most colorful and important figures. In one interview toward the end of her life she said, “Courage is the most important virtue, because you need courage to live out all the other virtues consistently.” Her life is possibly her most inspiring work. If your summer could use a little lyrical beauty and encouraging uplift, then join me for this message.
