Dec 30, 2012

The sermon was delivered on Sunday, December 30, 2012, during the contemporary service at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Eric Banner, Intern Minister.

SERMON DESCRIPTION

As the year draws to a close, many of us are struggling to find a place to put all our things. But our faith teaches that it is not what we have that is most important, but who we are, and how we live. In our church we teach neither the easy grace of a prosperity gospel, nor the ascetic poverty of monasticism. Instead, we teach a middle-way, where the questions are instead: What is enough? and What shall we do with what we have? For many of us, our closets are overflowing – in no small part because we are holding onto pieces of our past that no longer fit our lives.

In this time of New Year’s resolutions, are we ready to make room in our lives for the new people we want to be? Are we ready to first empty our closets of the old things that take up too much room to let our new self in? During this holiday season, a season of gift giving and receiving, will you give yourself the gift of letting go? Will you take this time to clean out the closet?
