Feb 19, 2017
The sermon was delivered on Sunday, February 19, 2017, at All Souls Unitarian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, by Rev. Dr. Marlin Lavanhar, Senior Minister.
Since the unexpected death of our daughter Sienna, we have learned that when a child precedes her parents in death, it reverses the usual dynamic of legacy. Instead of the parents’ legacy being in the child’s hands, the child’s legacy is in the parents’ hands. The Sienna Project is how we continue our daughter’s legacy. The Sienna Project is a non-profit which has now built eight schools in remote villages in Guatemala. Earlier this month, myself and sixteen All Souls members, were transformed by our experience building a new school in a small Mayan village. To see how Sienna’s short life will continually impact generations of children through education is a blessing beyond words. The Sienna Project is also changing our lives. Those who have participated in this year’s and past projects, have been transformed by the experience. It reminds me about the meaning and potential this life holds, even after death. We would like to share with you how the experience we had impacts the way we see our world and our place in it.
