SERMON DESCRIPTION

When a park ranger left Jane Goodall in the bush of Tanzania to find and study chimpanzees, he, like many others, thought she would last only a few weeks. British authorities were horrified, and the public considered the project to be dangerous if not amoral. When the Texas Tech climatologist, Katharine Hayhoe, talks today about how her study of climate science doesn’t threaten, but instead strengthens her conservative Christian faith, many consider her work to be dangerous if not amoral. These two faithful scientists and scientific people of faith are my guides as I seek new ways to respond to the public panic and expanding debate about religious responses to global climate change. Join me this Sunday to explore the lives and work of these two heretical woman, who both bring science and religion together in their lives and in their work. Don’t forget to think about who your own environmental hero or heroine is, and why.
